Jug-Rhyton

PRODUCT ID30

Information:

It’s handle is now missing but it’s existence is suggested by the traces of soldering to the body. The handle and the vessel stem were not found during the excavations. The entire jug body is covered with two embossed friezes. The figures of the lower one are larger and represent the wedding of Dionysus and Ariadne. Dionysus, with a thick beard and a banded ivy crown, is sitting in the center. There is a sitting young woman, holding a band, with which a winged Eros presenting a phiale is belted. Silenus is sitting next to Dionysus and bearing an ivy crown. Silenus and Dionysus hold in their risen right hands rhytons, front-shaped as protomes of a sphinx and griffon, from which the wine is poured into the phiales in their left hands. The frieze ends with dancing Eros. There is a round composition of swans, depicted on the jug’s bottom. The upper frieze includes a procession of Dionysus suite characters and a couple of lovers.
